Honu submersibles were custom-designed and built by DOER Marine and Sylvia Earle, legendary oceanographer and National Geographic Explorer at Large. DOER has a prestigious history of submersible design, construction, and operations. Their perfect safety record has enabled countless successful dives launched from luxury yachts and world-class scientific research vessels.
Honu is the vision of our Founder and CEO, Richard Bailey, an Ocean Elder and pioneer in sustainable luxury hospitality, who has brought science and tourism together in French Polynesia.

Oceanographer, explorer, author and speaker, National Geographic Explorer At Large, Founder of Mission Blue, Founder of Deep Ocean Exploration and Research, Ocean Elder, Council Chair Harte Research Institute, IUCN Patron of Nature, former Chief Scientist of NOAA, PhD from Duke University, 34 honorary degrees, 150+ awards for leadership in science, technology, exploration, conservation and communication.

Richard Bailey
HONU FOUNDER, CHAIRMAN OF PACIFIC BEACHCOMBER, & OCEAN ELDER
A recognized pioneer in the field of sustainable hospitality, Richard Bailey is the founder of French Polynesia’s largest luxury resort group, developer of the multi-award-winning resort The Brando, and founder of Tetiaroa Society. Inspired by a conversation with President Barack Obama, he began the Blue Climate Initiative to accelerate ocean-based climate solutions.

Stanley Rowland
BOARD MEMBER, TETIAROA SOCIETY
Stan is a Board Member of Tetiaroa Society, Executive Director of the Blue Climate Initiative, a business and legal adviser to Pacific Beachcomber, and a member of the Advisory Board of Island Conservation. Stan has focused his work in French Polynesia for the past decade and before that he worked as a corporate and finance attorney in San Francisco and Hong Kong.

Frank Murphy
PROGRAM DIRECTOR, TETIAROA SOCIETY
Frank has lived and worked in French Polynesia since 1992. He holds BAs in Biology and Environmental Studies from UC Santa Cruz, and an MA in Geography from UC Berkeley working on Holocene sea level indicators in French Polynesia. He has been Manager and Associate Director of the UC Berkeley Gump Research Station, and owner of an adventure travel company, Tahiti Expeditions.

Neil Davies
DIRECTOR, UC GUMP STATION
Neil graduated in Zoology from the University of Oxford and has a PhD in Genetics from University College London. Resident in French Polynesia for over 20 years, he serves as Director of the University of California’s Gump South Pacific Research Station on Moorea and as a Research Affiliate with the Berkeley Institute for Data Science. His research focuses on biodiversity genomics and how holistic computational models of place can advance democratic ecological action.

Romain Clervoy
DIVE OPERATIONS, TETIAROA SOCIETY
Romain's relentless curiosity of understanding how things work led him to study engineering and begin a professional career in a space startup. He discovered French Polynesia in 2015 as a volunteer in the turtle conservancy NGO Te Mana O Te Moana where he helped monitor the green sea turtle nesting season on Tetiaroa. His passions are photography and diving.

Evan is passionate about creating technology moonshots and advancing projects that deepen people's connection to nature. He was previously a Product Manager at Google and the founding CEO of Oceankind, one of the largest philanthropic funders of ocean health. Evan is an investor and advisor for mission-driven startups and nonprofit organizations.
